What is it about seeing yourself in pictures?

I look in the mirror. I know what I look like. But why is it that when I see a picture of myself, I immediately see every flaw and get really down on myself?

People always say that they got the wake up call about their weight when they saw a picture of themselves. Why is that? Has this ever happened to you?

It's kind of like in that movie, Clueless, when Alicia Silverstone says she always takes Polaroids to see how she looks in a certain outfit because she doesn't trust mirrors...

This is a picture of me taken like a week ago when I was hiking. My puppy doesn't look too happy, she wants to get on with her walk. But this picture did help me to get back to being strict. Yes, I've come a long way, but I still have a ways to go.
I could go on and pick apart everything little thing I hate about my body, but for your sake, I won't. I just need to stay on plan and get down to a weight I can be comfortable at.

I don't know what it is but you are right, mirrors and pictures are a whole different deal! Even a different mirror can do the trick, tonight at the movie theatre's bathroom I realized the pants I was wearing were definitely not flattering and I probably will never wear them again! Lol. For the record, I think you're looking great! We tend to focus on the one or two flaws we have when others focus on all of our beauty and not our tiny little imperfections. Now, if only we could see ourselves in someone else's eyes!

I honestly think you look great!
Look at how skinny your legs are, and how flat your tummy looks!

I think your legs look skinny!!! Maybe bc I think mine don't?? ;)

I KNOW exactly what you mean!!! I think I look alright in an outfit (or in general) then I see a pic and I'm horrified!!! I thought I had made more progress than that!!! Ugh!!! It just discourages me something fierce. I need it to put me back into action!!!

I know what you mean! You think you are looking better and then bam a picture comes along and it's not what you thought!

I think you look great! Look at those legs!

THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS TO ME!! I look in the mirror and think I look alright and then I'll be sitting or walking somewhere and catch my reflection in a window or in a surprise mirror and it doesn't register right away that it's me. Then I'm appalled!

Haha - loved Clueless. I should probably start taking pictures before I leave the house!

Images are a different perspective. We see ouselves in the mirror from about the same perspective, and our brain makes up the rest - mostly in our favor. That's why pictures can help. ^^

(I think you look pretty good.)

I know what you mean about pictures. Last weekend we went out to eat with my in-laws, and had a group photo taken. I thought I was looking pretty cute, but the photo almost sucked the air from my lungs. The cute hair I thought I had looked screwy, my fair skin was so pale I glowed white, my lips are so pale they blended into my face...yadda yadda. We're all too hard on ourselves in photos. Of course it doesn't help that my mother in law weighs 110 pounds. ;)

I have the SAME issue.... My "picture" is the mirror at my yoga studio. Whenever I see myself in the mirror, all I see are the bumps and ripples that I want to get rid of.... ugh.
