This running business is hard!
Just a little thought here... this program is called COUCH to 5k. I didn't exactly go from the couch, I have been working out for months, doing an hour on the elliptical and workout DVDs. I thought I was in "ok" shape. But apparently not, because just running for 60 second spurts is really hard! Now I'm wondering how I would have been if I had started this when I REALLY was just getting off the couch.
Also, Gen said this the other day, but my arms do kinda feel weird and heavy when I run.
Plus I have the worst shin splints!! That is the sorest thing on my body. My shins aren't fat, people! I'd rather be sore in my legs or butt or something, but nope, just shins.
I realize I'm a little whiny today but I won't be quitting. Hopefully it'll get better. That's what people tell me...
Attitude of Gratitude: Second date tonight!

I can't tell you if it will get better or not, but you should be proud of yourself for giving it a shot. You are a winner in my book, just take care of those shins - I know how painful that can be.
Shin splints are the worst!! Good luck with the running, sounds like you're doing pretty good so far!
It does get better! For at least 2 weeks (I think week 3 & 4) my hips were killing me. My hips! Weird spot, but they ached. They felt better after a run. Just keep with it!
The last time I ran a mile straight was in high school! That's nearly 10 years ago. Now, I am running 3 miles?!? I wasn't super out of shape when I got back into exercising, but I wasn't a runner.
Don't be afraid to repeat a week or a session, it's your program. Do it on your time!
Omg I know exactly what you mean about the shins! It's like, come on, those aren't what need worked out!! It does get easier, though I'm still waiting for it to be 'fun'. Keep at it!
I had been doing the couch to 5k...I really enjoyed it but have given it up for the time being. Ah well. Are you relaxing your arms while running? Maybe they are feeling heavy because you're holding them up too high? Hmm. I got nothing else.
Try running a little slower - that's okay, in the beginning even the snails were faster than me. (These days I am faster than them - though I am still being overtaken by slugs... no surprise there, they travel light. ^^ )
Then: The muscles in your shin are usually the first to give out on a long hiking trip as well... if they are feeling sore, that means you're doing something right. ^^
Plus: If your arms hurt, maybe you're holding them wrong (i.e. too high)?
Running is really hard, and a lot of people underestimate it. Once, a friend told me, "I thought about starting to run as easy exercise. Maybe I will start with 30 minutes and work it from there." I sat on the ground laughing for 30 minutes instead, which was a great workout as well. (She gave up after two sessions.)
So, just take it slow, and listen to your body. Great rewards ahead!
Yeah, the arm thing is weird... I move them while I'm running but it doesn't feel like quite enough. I think I narrowed it down to tense shoulders!! Lol. I'm sure it will get better soon!
I haven't had any shin issues yet, but I have a few friends who are runners so we talk about this a bit - one recommended a warmup that is supposed to help with it - if you're using a treadmill walk backwards on it for a few minutes. GOOD LUCK, I promise it gets easier!
Do something because you enjoy it... if you don't like running, try biking, here in TX we have 150 mile races... trust me, that will help with weight loss.
