Oh, the unavoidable cake.

We've all been there. Cake is an unavoidable part of so many occasions. And it's kind of rude to not have some cake at a friend's birthday, right?

I don't mind the occasional piece of cake. Everything in moderation is the key to long term weight loss, and depriving yourself only makes you want things more and ultimately resent the fact that you're eating healthy and not having that piece of cake.

Altho, for the calories, there are so many other things I would rather eat than cake...

This weekend is my sister's graduation, and we're ordering a cake. My mom is going to get it today (Saturday), so we can have it both Saturday and Sunday. (And then she is coming home, so we will basically have it around til it's done). And then the next weekend is my sister's birthday, so we'll be having cake again. (And again, having it around until it's gone.)

So I casually made the comment, "Oh man, cake two weekends in a row.." to my mom. And she flew off the handle! She went off about how of course we are having cake for these occasions and that I can't eat perfect all the time and I need to learn how to incorporate things like that into my diet and how I can't be so strict for the rest of my life, yada yada.

Yes, I agree and I get it. But at the same time, I was a little annoyed that she came at me like that. I have really good motivation going lately, and I really want to lose this weight so I can get to the maintenance phase. I would like to get as close to my goal as possible by the time we move. 1) Because I have lots of time to focus on it right now, and 2) so when I start over in a new place, I can be close to where I want to be weight-wise.

It's an added temptation which I don't always welcome and/or love, but of course I will be having cake this weekend and next. I'll just have small pieces and (hopefully) not go overboard. Do you all ever feel like this when you have little control over what you'll be eating?

Now this cake would be worth every calorie... (I just found this pic online and stared at it for awhile)
Attitude of Gratitude: Should be a fun weekend.

I TOTALLY agree and understand. This past week was my son's 6th birthday. We all went to my in-laws for dinner. There was lasagna, fried chicken, breaded pork, salad and of course cake....I was thinking "thanks" guess I should have ate before I came since I'm only gonna have salad.....they have no problem commenting on my fat, but when I am actually doing something about it, they don't help at all.....

I would be mad enough to not eat any cake at all. I would probably even get an attitude to go along with it (never a good combination :-) Since I also tend to get sarcastic when I'm angry there would be a real situation developing. Tell them you are allergic to cake - you break out in fat. Tell them you would rather have pie. I say take a stand; they can do what they want and you have the right to do the same. No guilt trips!! You didn't come for the cake; you came to celebrate a birthday and a graduation. Don't be bullied into doing things that will only make it take longer to get to your goals.

Have a wonderful weekend! It feels like celebration revolves around food and cake! It's so hard to find non-food ways to celebrate with groups of people!

I'm sorry your mom went off on you like that but she's probably just stressed.

I never feel as if I didn't have control over my eating. Well, if we visit with friends or family, it may be a little more difficult, but I've always found ways so far to sneak in something healthy... offer to bring salad for the BBQ, find out what we're going to eat so I can incorporate it into my schedule - but I am not that strict about my food anyway (which might explain why the weight is only "creeping off" of me).

Fortunately, most people are really supportive.

So I agree and disagree here. I disagree with your mom's approach. If you don't want cake then that is YOUR choice. There is no need to be snarky. Yes moderation is key but Cake is one of those things I CAN't moderate. So if I have to say NO than I should be respected and I hope you are too if you choose a smaller slice or say NO.

I'm so sorry for your Mom's comment. I'm sure it was discouraging. Not that it helps, but seriously...cake is the devil (to me anyway). :) I had cake at my son's 1st birthday party and have been off track since. He turned one in October. Yep, been off track since then and have gained 15 pounds back. Yep...cake is NOT worth it!!! If you can't do it and jump back on track, then don't. You DO NOT need to have any cake and if you feel you do, then just take ONE bite. It'll give you a chance to partake in the event, comment on the cake, and won't do any major damage. Fill up on other things. And two weekends in a row? NOOOOOO! :)

My son's birthday is next weekend. There will definitly be cake. And berries. I will eat berries. I will pass the cake around and try to stay out of attention so noone notices I'm not having cake. Good luck!!! Keep it out of site and then serve it to family at night... and you have your special diet treat... whatever that might be.

I understand ...in the scheme of things, we are not dieting THAT long and family especially could support without question after all they want us to be fitter, happier and healthier. I would feel like you do too

It is hard when people make comments, but they are usually coming from a different place than we think they are.
I don't feel obligated to eat anything anytime I am anywhere just because it is a birthday, or whatever. If I want it, which I usually do, I try to plan ahead for it, and I have a little piece and I eat it sloooow. If someone offers me more, or presures me to have more of something I don't want I will just say that I'm full and couldn't eat another bite. Somehow they feel if I am full that is better than if I am just being good...lol. People, who knows what they are thinking sometimes??

It's frustrating when you're not in control of the food options. The only time it's worth going over my calories is if I'm having an actual craving-otherwise it's just calories that I didn't even really care about. Keep with your motivation though-you're doing fabulously, even with the temptations!

argh! i feel you. just when you feel as though you're getting into a certain groove, certain temptations arise. i'm one of those people who absolutely LOVE cake. i wouldn't go out of my way to BUY the cake myself, but if it were there, i'd be extremely tempted to eat it (and probably would succumb to eating at least a small slice). if your family "forces" or "pressures" you to eat the cake, now that is quite unsupportive, but if that's not the case, it looks as though you're gonna have to exercise some double strength will power! it'd be nice if the cake perhaps could be a healthier version than the calorie-laden original. would that idea go over well with your fam? anyway, it seems as though you've got it together. hope you have fun celebrating! :)

Oh yes! One of my epiphanies this past year was realizing how much social eating was impacting me. I know I need to learn to incorporate it into my life without the feelings of resentment or going overboard with eating. It is hard! That cake looks darn yummy to me! I have a ton of parties this month and am just determined to stay clear of the food, totally, whenever I can.

Cake is the worst. Hoping things went okay this weekend and you made choices that would help you reach your goals!
